League One Tranmere beat plucky Aldershot 2-1 in a FA Cup second-round replay to earn a home tie with Premier League Wolves

Win provides welcome distraction for Parry's men

Tranmere saw off League Two side Aldershot with a 2-1 win at the Recreation Ground to book a FA Cup third-round date with Premier League side Wolves. Aldershot battled hard for 90-minutes but could not find a way back into the match after falling behind minutes before half-time. Ian Thomas-Moore found the net from just inside the area to open the scoring, and Terry Gornell struck after the interval to secure the win. Substitute Oliver Bozanic pulled a late goal-back, but it wasn't enough to force extra time.

Languish

The win will provide a welcome distraction from league duties for Tranmere, who are struggling in League One. Les Parry's side languish in the drop zone and could be trading places with Aldershot next term. Kevin Dillon has guided his men into the play-off places, and the form of the Hampshire club showed in the first meeting between the two sides. The pair had to do it all again after a dour 0-0 draw at Prenton Park in which the Merseyside outfit struggled to break their lower league opponents down. The game followed a similar pattern this time around as neither side offered much in the way of goalmouth action, although Gareth Edds went just wide with a shot from outside the area. Aldershot striker Anthony Straker tested Luke Daniels' handling, but it was no problem for the Rovers keeper as Marvin Morgan failed to hit the target.
Ruthless
The few chances Aldershot did have were wasted and they were made to pay just before the interval, the visitors making the break-through thanks Thomas-Moore's strike that found the top corner three minutes before half-time. Rovers discovered a ruthless streak in the second period, doubling their lead after 49 minutes through Terry Gornell to put the game out of the Shots' reach. The home side made changes in an attempt to inspire a comeback, and it was substitute Bozanic who reduced the deficit. But Ian Goodison marshalled his side's defence superbly to see The Whites through into the third-round.
