Canavan and Hooper score for Iron, Dobbie nets for Swans

An extra-time Gary Hooper penalty saw Scunthorpe progress at the expense of Swansea in the Carling Cup. Niall Canavan had put the Iron ahead on 13 minutes at the Liberty Stadium before Stephen Dobbie equalised with 11 minutes to go for the home side, who then had Garry Monk sent off for a headbutt four minutes from time. But Hooper scored from the spot-kick on 111 minutes for Nigel Adkins' side, while the Swans' night then got worse with the dismissals of Gorka Pintado for a second bookable offence and Angel Rangel for violent conduct. With second-half substitute Dobbie already off the field injured it left Swansea with just seven players and when Besian Idrizaj also went off the field it looked as though the referee would be forced to abandon the match as the home side only had six fit players on the pitch. But Idrizaj was persuaded to go back onto the field and the game finished a few minutes later to a chorus of boos from the unhappy home crowd.

First goal

Scunthorpe took the lead after 13 minutes when Josh Wright's cross was turned in by Canavan from close range for his first goal in senior football. Swansea goalkeeper David Cornell, making his competitive debut for the club, then produced an excellent save to keep out Martyn Woolford's shot from 12 yards out. Sousa brought on Dobbie at the interval and the striker was in the thick of the action straight away when he shot wide from inside the area. Dobbie looked lively in the Swansea attack and he was unlucky not to draw his side level when his left-foot finish rattled the crossbar 15 minutes from time.
Equaliser
But the summer signing from Queen of the South was celebrating three minutes later when he produced a clinical right-foot finish from 20 yards out that flashed past Joe Murphy. However, Swansea were left with an uphill task when Monk was sent off after 86 minutes for a headbutt on substitute Michael O'Connor. The visitors made their numerical advantage count when Alan Tate handled in the area and Hooper made no mistake with the resulting spot-kick early in the second half of extra-time. Swansea then lost their discipline and Pintado was sent off four minutes from time before Rangel saw red a minute later for violent conduct. And the home side played out the last moments of the game with seven men after Dobbie came off due to injury, before Idrizaj also went off the field but was persuaded to go back on to allow the game to finish.
