Godsmark scores winner in extra time

Hereford produced a superb display at Edgar Street to knock Charlton out of the Carling Cup, with Jonny Godsmark scoring the only goal in extra time. John Trewick's League Two side played out a 2-2 draw with Morecambe in their opening game of the season on Saturday. They proved a match for their higher-division opponents and forced extra time after a goalless 90 minutes. Hereford had the better of the first-half exchanges with winger Marc Pugh opening up the Charlton defence with a series of attacks from the left flank. Pugh, who scored two goals against Morecambe in Hereford's opening fixture on Saturday, also drilled a shot against the Charlton post. Charlton striker Andy Gray should have out the Londoners in front midway through the half but he headed wide with a goal met at his mercy. Gray's striking power Izale McLeod also had a shot turned away for a corner from Hereford keeper Adam Bartlett. Winger Pugh had another chance early in the second period when he shot wide from close range but Charlton should have taken the lead in the 62nd minute when goalkeeper Bartlett saved a penalty from Gray after the striker had been brought down by Richard Rose. 19-year-old winger Godsmark, who only joined the Bulls on loan from Newcastle last week, then proved to be the hero in extra time. He scored the crucial goal in the 98th minute - drilling the ball past Charlton goalkeeper Rob Elliot into the roof of the net from close range - and Hereford held on to progress in the competition.
