Bayern on the brink of early exit after defeat on home soil

Bordeaux have booked their place in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League after beating Bayern Munich 2-0 at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday. The French champions took the lead in the 38th minute when playmaker Yoann Gourcuff saw his downward header creep past the flailing Hans-Jorg Butt before striker Marouane Chamakh clinched maximum points for the visitors in stoppage time after another blunder by Bayern's shot-stopper. Bayern felt aggrieved not to be awarded a penalty in the first half when Michael Ciani handled Miroslav Klose's goalbound shot, but the German outfit must now win their last two games in Group A to have any hope of qualifying for the last 16. Under-fire boss Louis van Gaal did little silence his critics as the Bundesliga giants not only relinquished their eight-match unbeaten home run in Europe, but failed to score a continental goal for the first time in 34 games. Bordeaux boss Laurent Blanc, meanwhile, can be delighted with his side after the visitors produced a disciplined performance to claim their spot in the next round of the competition.

    Suspensions

Bayern were forced to make two changes to the team that lost in France a fortnight ago, with Daniel van Buyten and Thomas Muller suspended after their red card antics last time out and in came Martin Demichelis and Danijel Pranjic. Star-man Franck Ribery was still absent with tendinitis while fellow marquee forward Arjen Robben was only fit enough to make the bench. Bordeaux boss Blanc named an unchanged side to the one that was victorious in Gameweek 3 as they looked to seal their place in the knock-out stages. Bayern came out with purpose and they nearly snatched an early lead when Bordeaux goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso pushed Edson Braafheid's cross onto his own crossbar in the second minute. Carrasso, who was inches from turning the ball into his own net, made amends in what turned out to be a man of the match performance, with a commanding punch in a crowded area on 13 minutes as the visitors struggled to find their flow at the start of the match. Bayern continued to press for the opener, but they nearly got caught out as Bordeaux came to life in the 26th minute when Brazilian midfielder Wendel marginally missed the head of Gourcuff in the penalty area with a killer cross. Two minutes later, chaos broke out in Bordeaux's penalty area after a Bastian Schweinsteiger free-kick looked destined for the top corner but for a fine one-handed save by Carrasso. Bayern did not let the move die and a goal-line scramble broke out following Luca Toni's header which saw Klose's goal-bound shot halted illegally by the hand of Ciani, but the defender got away with it despite the appeals of the home side. If the Bayern players were bamboozled as to how they failed to score or get a spot-kick in the 34th minute, they were left helpless in their own penalty area three minutes later when Bordeaux took the lead. The hosts were undone by a free-kick as Wendel's cross from deep found Gourcuff at the back post and his goalward, albeit tame, header was flapped at by Butt and the Bayern shot-stopper could only push it into his own net. The visitors, whose goals in Europe this season have all come via a set-piece until this point, were after another - this time a penalty kick when Fernando went down from Braafheid's challenge, but referee Pedro Procenca did not deem it a foul.
    Robben
The second half saw Bayern boss Van Gaal put his faith in Robben, who replaced Klose and the change prompted a response from the hosts. Robben watched Toni bear down on goal two minutes after the restart following a hoof forward by Schweinsteiger, but the Italian marksman blasted over from 10 yards. Robben was involved in Bayern's next chance as he played in skipper Mark Van Bommel, who drove into the penalty area before seeing his shot expertly, and legally blocked, by Ciani. Although Bayern continued to boss the second half, the German side lacked the finishing touch so Van Gaal rolled the dice by bringing on £23million striker Mario Gomez to play in a three-man attack with 30 minutes remaining. Robben, who had scored in every substitute appearance in Bayern colours until now, went less than an inch from levelling proceedings after he found space in the Bordeaux penalty box, but the Dutchman dragged his shot wide. Fellow substitute Gomez nearly made Matthieu Chalme pay for a sloppy backpass but the defender was bailed out by Carrasso, who was rapid off his line. Bordeaux had the chance to wrap up the win 15 minutes from time via another set-piece, but Chalme was unable to direct his free header on target before Gourcuff dragged an effort wide a minute later when he should have done better. Van Bommel was guilty of a weak finish in the 87th minute following a fleeting move down the left by the hosts, but as Bayern went in search of an equaliser, Bordeaux ended the game as a contest when Chamakh added the second. A long punt forward should have been dealt with by Butt, but the Bayern stalwart was a passenger as the ball sailed past him to allow Chamakh - who had not scored in his last 11 games - to apply the easiest of finishes. Moments later, boos rang around the Allianz as Procenca blew for full-time to condemn Bayern to defeat, but Bordeaux will take the plaudits and are sure to be the toast of the French nationals in the morning papers.
