Sporting Lisbon have insisted that they have no plans to sell striker Liedson.

Portuguese to keep star striker

Sporting Lisbon have insisted that they have no plans to sell striker Liedson. The 30-year-old has been at the Jose Alvalade for five years and is now a cult figure. He has scored over 100 goals for The Lions but he is now being linked with a move away from the club. Russian giants Spartak Moscow are said to be keen, but reports in England have linked Tottenham and Newcastle with a move. His agent Gilmar Veloz has also suggested there is interest from the Premier League. "People say Spartak Moscow is an option, but English clubs are also interested," Veloz is quoted as saying in the Portuguese media.

No sale

However, Sporting president Soares Franco has insisted the club do not need to sell and they have no plans to let Liedson leave. "Liedson has a contract until 2010 and we are not looking to sell players," he said. "Our accounts are good without player sales." Sporting coach Paulo Bento admitted there was interest, but he too insisted the player would be staying. "I don't believe I'll lose him. The fact there is interest doesn't mean anything. If we lost every player there was interest in Sporting wouldn't have enough players to make a squad."
Happy
The player himself is more than happy to stay put. "What I can guarantee is that while I'm here I will always give my maximum. Nothing has been said to me," he said. "My agent is here this week and we're going to talk about some matters. But I'm calm and I feel good at Sporting."
