Watford not in a position to offer skipper new deal

Watford captain Jay DeMerit is set leave Vicarage Road this summer. The defender helped the club to avoid relegation from the Championship last term but that appears to mark the end of his Hornets career. This summer's World Cup is the next stop for the USA international, who had previously said he would not open contract negotiations until he returned from South Africa. But with the London club still trying to reduce their wage bill, manager Malky Mackay says they will not be offering the skipper a new deal. Mackay told the Watford Observer: "Jay is out of contract and financially we are not in a position to offer him a new contract and he has the World Cup (with USA). "Jay also has an awful lot of other things in his life outside football that he is going to think about and even what country he is going to be in next year. "I don't even think Jay knows what is going to happen after the World Cup yet but he goes with my best wishes."
