Just an average contest, despite there being five winners in the field and Gilded Cove, who didn't have the best of runs at Wolverhampton, is fancied to gain compensation at the expense of Avondale Lad and Molotov. Reg Hollingshead's colt has yet to win beyond five-furlongs, but he is fully effective over this trip as he showed when runner-up to Blandys here back in March, and he at least comes into this in good form, unlike the majority of most of his rivals. Molotov is closely matched with the selection, but he is far from a straightforward ride and it isn't too hard to dismiss him. The biggest threat should come from Avondale Lad, who turned in his best effort this year at Thirsk last time in an Amateur riders event when fitted with the sheepskin cheekpieces for the first time. Back in the hands of a professional should prove beneficial, although he will have to overcome a wide draw. Evangelist would have a chance at his best, but consistency isn't his middle name, while Caronte, who has plenty of form around here is still a maiden after 27 attempts, which doesn't exactly inspire confidence, so Gilded Cove looks the safest option.
