Verdict

Always a tricky race to solve, this big-field handicap looks no different this time around and the suggestion is ST MORITZ, with Captain Brilliance and Palace Moon among a host of potential dangers. The Mark Johnston-trained pick has not yet won in three attempts this season, but he has put in three very respectable efforts, two of them over on the Rowley Course, where he was just edged out over this trip on fast ground in May. His run in the Royal Hunt Cup last time was a superb effort in the context of this race, and a 3lb rise is fair enough. If that great judge of pace Frankie Dettori can dictate matters then he could have them all at it from some way out. Captain Brilliance won over course and distance last season and is 12lbs higher today. A Nottingham spin last month should have blown away the cobwebs and with the yard going well we can probably expect a return to the sort of form that earned him this mark last season. Fast ground suits. Palace Moon was doing all of his best work at the business end in the Wokingham and is well worth a try back up in trip on this less testing track. The ground will suit and despite a 5lb rise he is very much in our thoughts. Course winner Signor Peltro is very effective at this trip and should be among those competing, while Crown Choice will find it tougher than the Sandown handicap he won last time, though can't be ruled out from 5lbs higher. Dubai Dynamo is 2lbs worse worse off with our pick for beating him a length earlier in the campaign but has a bit to prove after two disappointing efforts and St Moritz gets the vote.
