In depth

Verdict

Sir Jasper can defy topweight over course and distance winner Melaina and Pardon Moi in the first race on the card. Sir Jasper has hit a rich vein of form lately, gaining back-to-back successes at Southwell on his last two starts. The step up to seven furlongs and drop to selling company obviously helped on the first occasion, but the manner of his effortless follow-up on that track last time suggests that he is improving fast and the drop back to six furlongs should not bother him in this company. Having won a seller here the time before last, Melaina was then asked to try and make all in slightly better company at Southwell a fortnight ago, and did not do too badly in finishing second. Slightly more restraining tactics should ensure that she figures somewhere in the finish. Of the rest, Pardon Moi makes most appeal. Christine Dunnett¿s charge ran well enough here the time before last to merit a mention, and will appreciate a return to this slower surface after being outpaced on Lingfield¿s Polytrack on her latest outing. However, with the form in the book, it is to Sir Jasper that we return for our idea of the winner.
