In depth

Verdict

Ingleby Arch sets a fair standard and is fancied to be the one to beat in this company. Cape Gold and El Capitan have shown promise in their starts so far and, along with newcomer Makai, are respected as dangers. Makai is bred to get further in time and is one to bear in mind for future reference whatever happens today. Mark Johnston does have first time out winners but this son of Caman Kai would not appear to be the most outstanding prospect on pedigree. El Capitan was well held by subsequent Coventry Stakes winner Red Clubs on his debut, but has shown that he is capable with a couple of solid efforts on the All Weather since. He revert to turf with good each-way prospects if he runs to his best. Cape Gold is a well-bred type that still holds a Derby entry at this stage. However, his sales race options for the back-end of this season look far more realistic targets. Even so, he will now need to show improved form to strengthen his claims if he is to be a serious candidate for the Two-Year-Old Trophy in October. The son of Cape Cross is a half-brother to a multiple winner on the continent and he looks sure to get better with experience. Nevertheless, Ingleby Arch, who also has a return to Redcar on the agenda, sets the level for the time being; even though he looks harshly treated from his current mark. His proximity to the well regarded High Curragh in a similar contest at Ayr looks a reliable guide and the David Barron-trained colt will be hard to beat with a similar display this afternoon.
