In depth

Verdict

A tough race in which course specialist Captain Clooney is given a tentative vote over Greenwhich and Paddy The Optimist. He is certainly not one to have the mortgage on but is able to race off a light enough handicap mark, and it is interesting to note that his only career victories have come with testing conditions at this course. Ex-hunter Greenwich is interesting. Michael Scudamore's charge had decent form behind Bright Approach a couple of seasons ago but his better form seemed to be on a faster surface. Basil out slogged Moral Support at the track over 3m 5f. He was probably gifted this race by the mistakes of the latter and will need plenty more rain to be seen at his best. Paddy The Optimist is unexposed but significantly upped in trip by Tom George. Villair is in good form at the moment for Charlie Mann. His form has been noted by the handicapper, and he will need a career best effort in order to shoulder his huge weight to victory. Captain Clooney is the selection, albeit to minimal stakes.
