Verdict

KING COLOMBO is a speculative choice in an open handicap. Jo'Burg is a threat now he has proved his stamina for the trip, while Comrade Cotton and Chalice Welcome are closely matched and are others worth a mention. Chalice Welcome is 4lb higher after winning at Brighton 10 days ago and should make a bold bid to uphold the form with Comrade Cotton. Both are in good heart and it will be an intriguing personal match between them. Jo'Burg has the assistance of a leading amateur, so has to merit respect. However, as Simon Walker only needed four wins to retain his crown as amateur champion on the all-weather for 2008/09; it is worth bearing in mind it is a very thin line between success and failure at this level. Therefore, as King Colombo is officially rated as a 6lb better horse; the Julia Fielden-trained gelding is given the nod today. The four-year-old has a bit more scope for improvement and, having gone close over course and distance last week; he has a solid chance of taking advantage of this afternoon's ease in grade.
