In depth

Verdict

Mirjan's love affair with Newcastle can continue at the expense of McEldowney and the lightly-weighted Kayf Aramis. Mirjan, winner of the 2004 Northumberland Plate, has continued to hold his form this season. Arguably, his third to Lightning Strike on his latest start was one of his best performances. Jim Crowley rode him that day and keeps the rise on the ten-year-old. The ground holds no terrors and the presence of McEldowney should ensure the decent pace he needs. McEldowney is another one of those tugh-as-teak stayers at the Mark Johnston yard. This natural front-runner has improved during the season but has yet to win over this trip and Mirjan is fancied to outstay him. Kayf Aramis stays forever and any more rain would aid John Spearing's runner cause at the bottom of the handicap.
