In depth

Verdict

An awful race that can go to Donnas Double, with Lord Mayor and Pomfret Lad expected to follow him home. The selection has a fantastic record at Newcastle, having won four times over the course and distance. He may now be 11 but Karen McLintock's evergreen is retaining his form well. He finds these claiming events much more amiable than handicap's and his ability to handle the soft conditions is a major plus in a race full of disappointing types. The stall ten draw is a worry as he does tend to take a pull but Tony Hamilton should be able to produce him late to score. Lord Mayor has the highest BHB rating of these but has flattered on numerous occasions and this does seem the last throw of the dice for Robert Cowell's runner. Pomfret Lad is also approaching unknown territory in terms of the trip but acts well on soft ground and John Quinn is in decent form.
