In depth

Verdict

Cusoon is a horse on the up but will have to shoulder a 6lb hike in the weights for his latest victory if he is to go in again, so the tentative nod goes to Stargazer Jim ahead of Activo and Solo Flight. This is a competitive handicap and the selection represents a yard in fine form this winter on the all-weather. Stargazer Jim won in authoritative fashion over course and distance five starts ago, and although he has risen in the weights since then he can go well today, especially under a power-packed ride from Tony Culhane. Activo has a tendency to not settle in his races and this could again be a problem in a tough race, although we know that he acts over this course and distance. Cusoon has been in fine fettle since his switch to the all-weather, and judging by the manner of his win last time out, he could well be up to defying his rise in the weights. Of the rest, James Caird is undoubtedly talented but is arguably better over a mile and the same can be said for Vicious Warrior and Atlantic Quest. One of only two three year-olds in the lineup, Grand Jour drops back to a more realistic level after ambitious tilts at Listed and Group prizes earlier in the year, although again the gelding appears to be better over a shorter trip. Overall then, Stargazer Jim has ticks in all the right boxes and so he gets the tentative vote.
