In depth

Verdict

Another close one to call, with Kausse de Thaix just getting the vote ahead of Hi Laurie and Commanche Jim. Oliver Sherwood has had a lean time of things over the past two years, but could be a trainer to follow this term, and in Kausse de Thaix he has just the sort to follow. The French-bred has been blessed with plenty of stamina, and after his two Towcester victories last spring, a trip to Cheltenham was on the agenda, but he bypassed the Festival and ran at Haydock a week later where he finished third of ten. He is a natural chaser, and owner Andrew Cohen should have some fun with him in staying events this term. If fit enough, a comeback win is very much on the cards. Ex-Irish Hi Laurie looked the part when opening her account on these shores at Uttoxeter last month, but it was not the best of races, and she will do well to defy a rise in the weights. Commanche Jim is another that may well be anchored by his weight on his return to the fray, and Alfred The Grey is seven-pounds out of the handicap, so we return to Kausse de Thaix as the answer.
