In depth

Verdict

Jayer Gilles may prove the answer in a race in which nothing really stands out, with Bendarshaan, Phoebe Woodstock and Irish Wolf others to consider. Jayer Gilles remains a maiden after 17 career starts, but is much better handicapped than at this time two years ago, and ran well to finish third at Warwick a fortnight ago on what was only his second outing of the year. Surely his time will come, and he gets a small vote of confidence over Bendarshaan who beat him when they met at Pontefract in 2004 but who is now 5lb worse off for that meeting. Even so, Chris Dwyer's charge is not badly treated at present and could easily take a poor event like this so has to be on the short-list. Phoebe Woodstock was no match for Alambic at Yarmouth in July and found 12 furlongs too short at Goodwood last time so is worth a mention along with Irish Wolf who lines up fit from two decent runs over hurdles. He will not be bothered by having to hump ten stone, and is worth chancing for the frame at least, but we return to Jayer Gilles as the answer.
