In depth

Verdict

Desert Stream caught the eye at Redcar and makes more appeal than Battledress, with only Heathcote and Shortbread worth a mention of the rest. Desert Stream made a pleasing return to action when second to Jaafi at Redcar, and as he will strip a lot fitter now, merits serious consideration with not too many major rivals to worry about. He has obviously had his problems since being involved in a bit of a rough race on his debut at Gowran Park when trained in Ireland, and Mark Johnston's patient approach will hopefully pay off. Having shaped quite well on all three Turf outings last term, Battledress had his limitations exposed when beaten on the all-weather in April and will be of more interest when going into handicaps. Heathcote failed to quicken at Chepstow and should appreciate the extra two furlongs, while Shortbread has not been seen since finishing in mid-division at Newbury last October. Desert Stream is out to make up for lost time and is the pick.
