Verdict

A really taking hurdling debut from TETLAMI, who shrugged off a 602-day absence to make himself a live contender for the Supreme Novices' at Cheltenham. He was ridden with confidence by David Bass, and just tracked the pace before creeping closer before the home turn. Two quick jumps in the home straight took him to the front and he shook off a host of horses in with a chance, and then the strong-travelling Knight Pass at the last, to quicken smartly away for a comprehensive win. His best performances have come when there has been a bit of cut in the ground, which may leave him up against it in a speed test at Cheltenham should the ground be quick, but he was very professional here and the form could work out well. Ultimately Black Thunder stayed on best of the rest for second. He wasn't unfancied here and this relation of Tataniano made a fine hurdling bow, just lacking the experience when the field bunched up off the home turn. Knight Pass had every chance but was unable to belittle his rivals as he had done when dotting up on his hurdling debut at Exeter. It's worth remembering that he was conceding weight to some talented rivals, so we shouldn't be too harsh, but his finishing effort was a little laboured having travelled up well. Time will probably show that the first two are quality, and it will be interesting to see where connections head next. It's also perhaps worth remembering that his below-par efforts have come on very stiff finishes, so perhaps Aintree's Festival will suit better than Cheltenham's. Tante Sissi came from further back than the leading trio and ran a very encouraging hurdling debut, especially as a filly up against the boys. She'll appreciate a stiffer test of stamina in time, and this wasn't run at a frantic gallop. They were miles clear of Old Laxey in fifth, who looked like being a major player but after travelling well he was made to look pretty pedestrian in the final half mile. The rest look a modest bunch and were all well-beaten, although it should be mentioned that Sole Survivor's chance went with a blunder at the second-last; he was eased after.
