Verdict

Like many novice/maiden hurdles, the pace took a while to warm up, but once it did it was fairly evident that the two well-fancied runners, Keys and CINDERS AND ASHES, along with newcomer Ile De Re, were going to fight out the finish. As Ile De Re backed out of the equation with just one left to jump, Donald McCain's charge was going the better and a swift leap at the last gave him a length, which he then extended up the run-in. He had looked unlucky on his hurdling debut at Ascot (badly impeded at a hurdle) but made amends here, jumping well for Jason Maguire in a more prominent role than last time. His trainer thinks a lot of him, and the layers were quite impressed regarding the Supreme Novices', but it's hard to imagine that there won't be a few ahead of him come March. Mind you his trainer is adamant that the two mile Cheltenham race is a firm target so ante-post fans should take heart from that, as well as his good fifth in the Champion Bumper at last-season's Festival. The runner-up Keys had got the better of his rival in a minor event last year but just lacked a little experience over hurdles here. His jumping is likely to pick up as he goes along, and he clearly has an engine, so he's a horse to keep on the right side of. He did wear blinkers when showing improved form in handicaps on the flat and they could feasibly return for his next start. Ile De Re had a nasty experience when falling on his final flat start, but seemed well over that and he hurdled well on this debut, bar a tired looking mistake two out. He wasn't given a hard time when beaten, and it's worth remembering that he was the first to go after the long-time leader Manahej. He stayed two miles on the flat and his future in this sphere could lie over 2m4f+. High Office wasn't particularly well-fancied on this hurdling debut and made a few novicey mistakes before tiring out of things. The rest look modest at best, so it might not be too wise to get too carried away with how far strung out the field was at the line.
