In depth

Verdict

The drop back to this trip can prove successful for JEER, who is taken to come good again at the main expense of Mr Freddy and Red Kestrel. The selection was tried over 1m 6f here last time, leading 3f out but ultimately coming up short because of how he pulled earlier in the piece. If he could settle better than he would probably stay a fair but further than this. For today, however, he has his conditions and is back over his favoured trip, so we will chance him to come back to form. Mr Freddy did well to beat the in-form Zaplamation when last seen at Pontefract, and that stiff 10f at the West Yorkshire track augurs well for his ability to stay this far on the much flatter Knavesmire. He gets his favoured fast ground and is up 7lbs today, but should remain very competitive. Red Kestrel races over his optimum trip, and although he has to prove himself on good to firm on turf, he has now slipped to a good mark and should be bang there. Baltimore Jack looks weighted up to the hilt, although he has the benefit of Simon Walker up, and with little else standing out we'll side with Jeer. Jonathan Doidge
