In depth

Verdict

A swirling handicap that has more than a hint of a 'whose turn is it today' about the outcome. Or Royal is as admirable as they come and even his advancing years would not be off-putting if he is supported before the race. Little Brave has lived up to his name on numerous occasions and would make some appeal on the pick of his form. However, sentimental betting has always been the easiest way of siding with a loser. Aveiro, Raise A Melody and Bobby Kennard have all gone well enough here in the past to at least warrant a mention and any one could sneak into a place if they run up to their best. Whereas Vandenberghe is almost impossible to fancy as he has plenty to prove at this trip. Therefore it is hard to look past Toni Alcala, Royal Castle and Beauchamp Magic when drawing up the shortlist. The first named is very capable of going close and merits a second look in this company, but he has a very poor strike-rate and could be frustrating to side with again. Beauchamp Magic has also let his supporters down on too many occasions to confidently support so Royal Castle is put forward as a token small stakes selection in a truly dreadful contest that will provide a tenuous form line that will undoubtedly not be upheld when the winner reappears.
