In depth

Verdict

Stormbeam doesn't look overburdened with a mark of 65 for his handicap debut and now stepped up in trip he is fancied to see off Willkandoo and Driven. The selection has shown a semblance of ability in three runs to date, with his best performances coming on the all-weather last season. The drop to six furlongs was against him last time out and he can improve now tried over this trip. Wilkandoo was well-backed last time and he looks to be ahead of the handicapper. However he doesn't appear to be blessed with a turn of foot and his two wins have comes at courses with a stiff uphill finish so it remains to be seen whether this track will play to his strengths. Monashee Rock won well last time and warrants a 4lb rise in the weights; however he needs to show that a mile is what he really wants. Dream Sea has but some fair performances in recently, but all have come in defeat, whilst Nikolaievich has claims. However his profile is patchy to say the least and he is hard to truly fancy. Addikt was disappointing recently at Goodwood, but the track may not have truly suited having disappointed there before and today's drop in trip may also be in his favour. Mr Hitchens has plenty of weight and whilst he ran well last time, he will do well to give lumps of weight away here in first-time blinkers. Driven must be considered as he has shown ability here in the past, however he is yet to fulfil his potential, so we are happy to take him on and side with Stormbeam to small stakes.
