In depth

Verdict

Alfie Flits looked out of the top drawer in bumpers and is taken to make a winning start to his flat racing career and he gets the vote ahead of Som Tala and Aspasias Tizzy. The last mentioned showed promise on his Leicester debut last month and has to be respected with the Johnston yard now back among the winners with more regularity. Tamatave clearly has the ability to win a race of this nature but is becoming expensive to follow, while The Grey Man has taken the same route here as the selection but has not shown the same aptitude in bumpers and failed to sparkle in two starts on the flat. Som Tala failed to progress as much as anticipated from his debut outing when well held behind Hala Bek at Newbury last time but the winner there looked useful so there may be more to come from Mick Channon's colt. Alfie Flits has looked useful in his bumpers though and it will be a disappointment if he is not good enough to beat these.
