Verdict

The Leather Wedge gets a speculative vote over the likes of Safranine, Bella Tutrice and Beamsley Beacon in the first race on the card. The Leather Wedge is drawn in stall 12, which, contrary to popular opinion, is not the disadvantage that many believe, as in fact runners in the high boxes over five furlongs at Southwell boast a 40 per cent strike-rate over the past 12 months. With that in mind, Bob Johnson's six-year-old should have a sound chance of going one better than when short-headed by Lady Pekan here a fortnight ago. That was in G4 company so the slight drop in grade will help, and although he is actually worse off at the weights with Safranine who was fourth, we feel that if he can get into the lead early enough, he may well be able to put enough daylight between himself and Ann Stokell's challenger. Of the rest, Bella Tutrice has it to do with Beamsley Beacon on their recent Wolverhampton running, and with the rest, including old Torrent having shown little of late, it is The Leather Wedge who makes most appeal.
