In depth

Verdict

Although Mana D'Argent has solid claims on the best of his form he faces no easy task from top weight after his long winter break. Therefore, The Mark Johnston-trained seven-year-old is taken on with Thewhirlingdervish, who has a good record when fresh and is taken to reverse last season's form with Kristensen on these terms. Zoltano is another worth considering as he is less exposed than most and arrives here after a comfortable success at Mussleburgh earlier this month. The six-year-old will handle the predicted going and is no forlorn hope for each-way players if the prices permit. The same comments apply to Greenwich Meantime, who coped with the step up in trip last time and it would be no surprise to see more use made of him today. However, he may struggle to reverse the form with The Ring now that Mary Reveley's representative has got the benefit of a run behind him and this ex-inmate of Mick Channon's is fancied to pose the selection the most problems. That said, Thewhirlingdervish ran a cracker under a big weight in this race last season and, considering that he is 2lb lower and has the assistance of a 7lb claimer, he has rock-solid claims at the weights and just edges the vote this time around.
