In depth

Verdict

In a competitive opening handicap, Turks Wood is fancied to follow up his recent Yarmouth win, with Scarlet Invader and Fantaisiste seen as the main dangers. Although slightly disappointing at Folkestone last time, Fantaisiste had earlier finished a good second to Yomalo over six furlongs here. That winner has since been placed in Listed company, so Paul Cole's filly has to be respected with the extra furlong likely to suit. Scarlet Invader recorded a decent time when landing a similar event at Lingfield on yielding ground last time, and with the John Dunlop yard in top form this week he looks sure to run a big race. But we just prefer the chance of Mark Tompkins' Turks Wood. A most consistent gelding, he deservedly got his head in front when beating Torquemada by a length at Yarmouth. He appreciated the change of tactics that day, and as he learns to settle there should be more to come from Turks Wood who is fancied to score here on just a four pounds higher mark.
