In depth

Verdict

A highly competitive opening event, but South Atlantic is taken to regain the winning thread after an unlucky run last time; James Fanshawe's pair of Inverness and Dubrivsky could provide the main dangers. South Atlantic, a maiden winner at Musselburgh, had looked the type for a valuable handicap and was fancied for a similar race at Sandown last week, when he finished only sixth to Crafty Calling. However, Sir Michael Stoute's colt did not have the clearest of runs on that occasion and is probably worth taking another chance with here. This extra furlong should suit, allied with what is sure to be a stronger pace, and he appears well handicapped on some of his earlier maiden form. James Fanshawe saddles two interesting contenders. Inverness, the mount of Oscar Urbina, is on a hat trick after winning races at Newmarket and Goodwood and could still be a step ahead of the handicapper, while Jamie Spencer's mount, Dubrovsky, has his first run of the season and was most impressive when winning his maiden at Warwick last year. A number of these come here in good form, including Star Sensation, Opera Glass and Chingkara, but may struggle in this company off their current marks, and we take South Atlantic to begin to fulfil his potential and land his first handicap here under Kieren Fallon.
