In depth

Verdict

Phrenologist may be the answer to a wide open event, with Spinning Dove, Smith N Allan Oils, Superchief and Sir Laughalot all holding claims as well. Having made a fair debut at Windsor in September, Phrenologist has been confined to Lingfield since, opening his account at the expense of the fancied Salon Prive in November. The drop back to six furlongs seemed to suit him that day, but his latest effort over that trip suggests that he is worth another try over seven furlongs. Although a four-year-old now, he is still on a learning curve and has more scope than most. Spinning Dove has a 192-day absence to overcome but does not look badly treated on the best of his placed form, while Sir Laughalot, despite topweight is another to consider. He bounced back from a poor display the time before to finish second here just three days ago, and if in the same mood, can reach the frame. Smith N Allan Oils has been worth following this season, and has been in good form lately. The switch to the faster Polytrack seems to have done the trick for this northern raider who thrives on being kept busy, and he can give the selection, Phrenologist, most to do.
