In depth

Verdict

A decent handicap to sort through with several in-form horses. Starzaan looked to be hating the fast ground at Newmarket when runner-up to Knavesmire Owen and will need plenty of rain if he is to be a force in this, while Blue Leader would also prefer some give underfoot. The latter may well have been flattered to beat the reluctant Code Sign at Goodwood and looks to be on a high enough mark for what he has achieved. The consistent Persian Lightning should again give a good account, as should Sharpcut, who will be better suited by this trip having failed to stay last time. However, the vote goes to Lewis Island, who hails from a yard in terrific form at present. He probably turned in his best effort to date last time when not beaten far in a 0-90 Classified Stakes race, with the useful yardstick Wait For The Will, a couple of lengths back in fourth. A re-production of that effort would be good enough in this and as an added bonus, the stables apprentice Robert Miles will take a further 7lbs off his back. Amanda Perrett's Overstrand and Mick Channon's consistent filly Miss Gigi are others to consider.
