In depth

Verdict

From the best of the draw a chance is taken on QUICK DEAL ahead of fellow potential-improver Serhaal; Rezwaan, Akamon and Primary Colours are others worthy of note in an intriguing affair. John Gosden's American-bred cost $525,000, so it's fair to assume connections had hoped he'd turn out better than a 64-rated handicapper. In fairness he did show some promise on debut at Nottingham before possibly failing to get home over 1m2f, so the drop back in trip is a positive and maybe he can start to show something now switched to the polytrack. Serhaal is another handicap debutant to make appeal; he can be expected to have improved for his seasonal return at Doncaster and is bred to be at his best at around this trip. Rezwaan cost new connections 55,000gns having previously been in the care of Ed Dunlop. He's back down to his sole winning mark and the drop in trip should serve him well so under a positive ride he could go close. Akamon's best efforts have come on artificial surfaces so she's considered despite proving disappointing in handicaps of late; she needs a market check along with Primary Colours who has disappointed favourite backers the last twice, but the support he's attracted suggests he's shown something at home and the first-time visor could spark further improvement. Claimant seems to have improved for a winter having taken second on his return but the form of that is dubious and the handicapper has taken little chance, so we'll return to John Gosden's Quick Deal, although it has to be said we'd like to see some market support.
