In depth

Verdict

UK raiders have a fine record in this though there's nothing amongst today's eight entries of the calibre of last year's winner Dick Turpin. The most striking statistic is that not one of the past 11 winners has been drawn in single figures so nine of the entries can probably be dismissed on those grounds. The consistent Catalpa Sail is drawn 11, the same as Dick Turpin, but his trainer Dermot Weld appears to have a much better chance with MOONLIT GARDEN, who gets the vote after competing with distinction at pattern race level since her debut victory at the Curragh. She's the definite form pick though this is an unknown trip and it's possible that soft conditions may find her out. Johnny Murtagh has been booked for the French-trained Dereenatra, who didn't have much to do to last time to land a maiden in the Provinces but is presumably well regarded. David Evans has three entries though the surprise Ripon Listed winner Bathwick Bear, who is comfortably the best of them, is drawn one and has to concede weight all round. Tom Dascombe places his horses well so the presence of the once-raced Adorable Choice would be interesting if she gets in with a high draw due to a non-runner. Alan Swinbank doesn't waste money on false journeys which makes easy Newcastle winner Chin'n Tonic a possibility.
