Verdict

Pole Star lost no caste in defeat in better company on his timber debut, and is confidently selected to go one better at the expense of Dargaville, American President and Rich Song to name but three. Pole Star had been noted working well at Newmarket prior to lining up in a grade C hurdle race at Newbury last month. Unfortunately he had the misfortune to bump into Martin Pipe's prolific winner Marcel and came off second best, beaten six lengths. However, he performed well until the closing stages when his jumping went a bit awry, and as he was a Group-class stayer on the Flat, the step up in trip today will be just what he needs to bring his stamina into play. It is hard to see any of today's opponents being up to the task, although Dargaville shaped fairly well when second to a 100-1 priced stablemate at Kelso. Of the rest, American President showed a bit of promise when last seen out nearly two years ago, and Rich Song comes from a stable that normally does better with its chasers. Everything points to Pole Star in the last.
