In depth

Verdict

With only three of the 15 runners in this bumper having seen a racecourse before the market should give us plenty of clues but in the absence of that signpost we side with Alan Swinbank's STETSON ahead of debut winner Bold Sir Brian and Keith Reveley's Thurnham. With an eye-catching flat pedigree the selection hails from a yard that take these races more seriously than most and with some stamina also in the bloodline to make sure this trip suits he should be putting in a good debut performance. If experience counts for anything then Lucinda Russell's Bold Sir Brain has to be given a chance after his debut success. The old adage that it's difficult to win a bumper under a penalty is applied here but there is some strength to the form from that contest and he remains on our list. Thurnham is another with a decent flat pedigree and looks bred or this kind of trip. His family tree connects him with a Derby runner-up so if living up to his potential he looks a real live contender. Rock N Rose and Swallow should be considered after solid debut runs but in a race were the market should be our best guide we go for Stetson in its absence.
