Avid Spell should be good enough to get off the mark at the third time of asking, with Clifden and Futoo the biggest dangers. Roger Charlton's colt has met a couple of smart performers on his two runs so far, finishing second to Attraction on his debut at Nottingham, and following that up with another second placing, behind the well-backed Mokabra over six furlongs at Newcastle. Clifden won on his debut at Yarmouth, but then found another Roger Charlton horse, Three Valleys, far too good when third at Nottingham. The market may give a clue as to his chance, but on the face of it he has a stiff task in giving four pounds to the selection. Mick Channon's colt, Futoo, has put up some fair efforts in defeat so far, and was not disgraced when third at Nottingham last weekend. He has place claims once again, and is preferred to Micky Thin, whose victory came in a moderate contest at Brighton and will do well to give the weight away to these superior rivals.
