Verdict

The usual mix of smart hunter chasers and no-hopers line-up to tackle the National fences for the first time this week. Luck is always needed in this but it's difficult to look beyond ON THE FRINGE (NAP) as Enda Bolger's 11-year-old bids to complete the Cheltenham/Aintree double for the second year in succession. Given a very patient ride by Nina Carberry at The Festival last month, the selection only had a neck to spare over Marito at the finish but hardly knew he'd been in a race. Jamie Codd is a solid replacement in the saddle today and he can again beat fourth Current Event and fast-finishing fifth Pacha Du Polder. Victoria Pendleton has given up the ride on the latter but Will Biddick should get a tune out of the Paul Nicholls' entry, who was second in the race last year. Major Malarkey, Mendip Express and Current Exchange weren't far behind at Cheltenham while Marasonnien is an interesting runner having easily won a couple of Irish points lately – he was a Grade 1 winner over hurdles back in 2012.
