Villarreal have sold Argentinian striker Luciano Vietto to Atletico Madrid, club president Fernando Roig announced on Monday.

Vietto joined Villarreal last summer from Argentinian side Racing Club, penning a five-year deal with the Spanish club.

He enjoyed an impressive debut season in the Primera Division, scoring 12 goals in 32 league appearances to help the club finish sixth in La Liga.

Spanish newspaper Marca claims Atletico have had an offer of around £14.3m accepted for the forward, and Roig confirmed he will be joining the 2013/14 champions.

"We have sold Vietto to Atletico Madrid," Villarreal supremo Roig said in a press conference on Monday.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone knows Vietto well, having signed the player from Estudiantes while he was in charge of Racing Club in 2011.

Simeone is keen to strengthen his attacking line this summer, with Croatian forward Mario Mandzukic having a medical at Juventus on Monday.
