David Ferrer won his fourth Mexico Open title on Saturday with a 6-3 7-5 victory over Kei Nishikori in Acapulco.

Japan's tennis player Kei Nishikori returns the ball to Spanish player David Ferrer during their Mexico ATP Open

Victory means the Spaniard has now won three ATP World Tour events in 2015, adding to his Doha and Rio crowns.

He is also the first player to reach four tour-level finals in consecutive weeks on clay and hard courts since Andres Gomez back in 1988 and the first player to win titles on clay and hard courts in back-to-back weeks since Ivan Lendl in 1985.

The world No 9 raced into an early 3-1 lead after trading breaks with his Japanese opponent, and Ferrer then served out the opener to love before continuing that momentum in the second, charging into a 3-0 lead.

Nishkori - who rises to a career best fourth in the world - was able to get a break back and later hit a fine forehand to make it 4-4.

But Ferrer broke again, crucially, at 5-4 and took the match in an hour and 49 minutes.

He won his previous three Mexico titles - in 2010, 2011 and 2012 - on clay.
