Agnieszka Radwanska claimed her first title of the season with a straight-sets victory over Venus Williams at the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Sunday.
The third seeded Pole triumphed 6-4 6-2 to earn her 14th career title and receive a timely boost going into the US Open.
Twice US Open champion Williams had beaten her top seeded sister Serena in three sets on Saturday and that win seemed to have taken its toll on the 34-year-old American, as Radwanska raced to a 4-1 lead with two breaks.
However, Williams rallied and broke back but Radwanska then held her nerve to see out the set.
In the second set, Radwanska immediately put the pressure on her opponent with a break and broke again to take a commanding 5-2 lead.
The Pole then held serve to complete her victory, fittingly winning the clash with an ace.
Radwanska, whose last win was in Seoul in September, said: “I am very, very happy. Everything was working for me today.
"I really had an amazing week. I always liked Canada but now I think I love Canada! I am looking forward to coming back."
Williams, who had played three straight three-set matches, admitted she had run out of gas.
"I am sorry. I fell a little short. I didn't have as much to give as I would have liked," she said, although she was pleased to have got to the final.
"I didn't imagine that I would get to the final. I fell a little short today, but it's been a wonderful week."
