Second seed Ivo Karlovic blasted his way past Bobby Ginepri to reach the second round of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, Rhode Island.

Karlovic made full use of his booming serve on the grass as he sent down 17 aces during a 7-6 (7/2) 6-2 victory.

Indeed, such was the Croat’s dominance on his own delivery that he won 92 percent of points on his first serve as he made light of blustery conditions.

Top-seeded John Isner advanced with a 6-3 7-6 (6) victory over fellow American Wayne Odesnik.

The two-time champion on Newport's grass courts in 2011 and 2012 rode his powerful serve, at one point topping 137 mph. He had 19 aces and only two double-faults.

Meanwhile, defending champion Nicolas Mahut of France, defeated Facundo Arguello of Argentina, 7-6 (1) 6-4.

However, fifth seed Donald Young came unstuck as he was beaten 7-6 (9/7) 6-2 by Australian Samuel Groth.

There was better news for another American, Steve Johnson, as the fifth seed dropped just three games during a one-sided 6-1 6-2 victory over compatriot Clay Thompson.

Elsewhere in the draw there were wins for Rajeev Ram, Tatsuma Ito, Malek Jaziri and Dudi Sela.
