World No 59 Sergiy Stakhovsky powered past eighth seed Lukas Rosol in the first round of the Open 13 in Marseille.
Stakhovsky, who famously upset Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2013, broke his Czech opponent twice in each set in a 6-3 6-2 success.
The Ukrainian thumped in nine aces and holding his own serve throughout in a match which lastest 54 minutes.
"It's great to win in Marseille," Stakhovsky told the official ATP Tour website.
"It's a lovely city. I always come back with pleasure. It was a good [match]. Unfortunately, I believe Lukas didn't play his best, but I'm very happy."
In the only other match in the main draw, Spanish teenage wildcard Borna Coric proved too good for Denis Istomin 6-4 7-5 in one hour and 16 minutes to snap a four-game losing streak.
"I'm so happy I won today because I was a little nervous before the match," said Coric, currently a career-high No 85 in the ATP Rankings. "This is my first time here and I enjoy this tournament. The crowd here is very supportive."
In the doubles tournament, British duo Colin Fleming and Jonathan Marray fought off Chinese Taipei wild card pair Cheng-Peng Hsieh and Hsin-Han Lee 3-6 6-3 11-9 to advance.
