In depth

Verdict

Mr Carpenter won twice here last summer and will be primed for this after a promising reappearance at Newcastle. Ilaraab began his winning run in a Thirsk novices' event last July and is now on a mark of 102 after completing a five-timer over the extended 1m2f course here in October. This is his first attempt at this trip but it looks certain to suit. My Frankel had no problems seeing off Taqareer over the trip at Kempton though his only poor run last summer came on soft ground so he wouldn't want any more rain. The latter remark also applies to Shandoz, who completed an Ascot double in late summer before finding soft ground against him in the Old Rowley Handicap at Newmarket. Throne Hall beat Taqareer almost two lengths at Doncaster in March and there's very little between them on the revised terms. LABEEBB didn't make his racecourse debut until June and improved throughout the season, culminating in a close third in an Ascot Class 2 handicap. He started odds-on for his reappearance at Wolverhampton but looked in need of the run and can make amends.
