Verdict

Another highly competitive renewal of this hot handicap. Several raced at Ascot last month with Aaddeey dropping back down in trip for this and Dawaam well beaten in the Listed Wolferton Stakes though Jim Crowley still prefers the latter to Al Zaraqaan. Astro King is back up in distance after finishing runner-up in the Royal Hunt Cup when ASCENSION ran below par on the fast ground. But Roger Varian’s grey had won nicely at Newbury before that with some give in the ground and breeding suggests there is more to come over this extra distance. Surrey Pride scored over track and trip in May with subsequent winner Fishable well behind but Nicholas T’s earlier success here came in an amateurs’ race. Bright Start will be sharper for a recent outing on the all-weather with the Godolphin charge preferred to both Good Birthday and the latter’s stablemate Johnny Drama.
