In depth

Verdict

Ed McMahon seems to have found the key to his string at present and is fancied to strike again with Romantic Evening, who is preferred over Flying Clarets and Chronomatic out of those with experience; while Silk Merchant represents a very shrewd operation and is worth monitoring for signs of support. The last named is a half-brother to juvenile winner Tippitt Boy, who won the Norfolk Stakes for Kevin McAuliffe way back when. However, if he runs to type, he will need this to bring him on and others make more appeal on balance at this stage. Chronomatic fared well on his debut and should be able to find a race somewhere along the line. However, the form of his first start is not working out and has only produced one Novice Stakes winner so far. Flying Clarets races away from Pontefract for the first time and should appreciate this easier track. A little juice in the ground will not go a amiss for her and she can make a bold bid here. However, preference goes to Romantic Evening, who was well fancied on his debut. The Richard Hannon-trained Mutawajid gave that form a solid boost at Newmarket this week and, with improvement anticipated, Romantic Evening gets the nod this time around.
