In depth

Verdict

Derby entry Earl Marshal can give The Queen cause for more celebration if (as can be expected) Sir Michael Stoute has him primed for his debut, while Scarlet Ibis, Phoenix Tower and Madaarek are others for the shortlist. Madaarek was noted staying on near the finish on his debut 11 days ago and will be wiser for the experience. He can be expected to handle ground and a bold run looks to be on the cards. Phoenix Tower is out of a half-sister to Day Flight and can be expected to improve with experience. Henry Cecil has 25% strike-rate with his two-year-olds at Yarmouth and it will come as no surprise to see the profitable run extended today. Scarlet Ibis represents Godolphin and is respected accordingly. However, she is also likely to need further than this and is not one to be going overboard with at cramped odds. The same can be said of the selection, who is obviously a late developing type. However, as the Stoute team have produced two debutante winners of this race in the last 10 years - it seems folly to oppose a proven track record and, with that in mind Earl Marshal is the first one to look at for us.
