Verdict

Consonant can defy topweight to beat Nite-Owl Fizz, Quiet Reading and Tinian in the opening event on the card. Trained by former national-hunt jockey David Bridgewater, Consonant was successful in selling company here 12 days ago in what was his first outing on a racecourse in four years no less. Formerly with David Loder as a juvenile, the son of Barathea has had problems with his legs in the past and will have to be very tenderley treated if he is to stand up to the rigours of racing. However, he did nothing wrong last time and connections are hopeful that he can pick up another race or two on the sand at this level or lower. Nite-Owl Fizz gets a big pull for a nine-length beating by the selection, but remains hard to win with, while Quiet Reading, third in this last year, drops back to this grade for the first time since and should be there or therabouts. Tinian was a prolific winner in Germany last year but has not shown anything since returning to these shores, and Mr Whizz responded to the fitting of first-time blinkers and eyeshield when finally returning to winning ways at Southwell six days ago. He might go well for a place, but if the legs stand up, Consonant can score again.
