In depth

Verdict

Frantic Tan has a touch of class about him and is taken to land his first prize since winning the De Vere Gold Cup at Haydock two seasons ago. The gelding, now in the care Dennis Caro having previously been with Nigel Twiston-Davies showed up for a long way in the North Yorkshire Grand National at Catterick last month before weakening close home and off a 9lb lower mark looks to have every chance on ground very much to his liking. Monsieur Tagel has slipped down the weights and was quietly fancied last time out at Ludlow where he was travelling well until falling halfway around. If staying on his feet here there is no reason why he can't give the selection a race over a distance he has shown he prefers though the soft ground may not be to his liking. Despite not having the best recent form, King Of Sparta has shown ability in the past. He was beaten only narrowly by the useful Foly Pleasant at this course last season. Timmy Murphy looks a positive jockey booking for Johnny Portman's gelding who looks well weighted to give the selection most to do. Keltic Heritage will have his supporters in this contest but he has struggled to cope off his current handicap mark and can be opposed here. Scotia Nostra looked a decent prospect a couple of years ago before injury forced a long lay off. Connections have not found an easy reappearance run for the gelding suggesting they believe him capable of winning. Any market move for this eleven-year-old would be significant.
