In spite of the usual preference for a stands side draw in sprints at Ripon, the pace here looks to be with the higher numbers and we will take MACHINIST to land the prize, with Inter Vision among a number of dangers. 'Dandy' Nicholls has four of the 20 runners here and it is not often easy to be precise about his best chance, but Machinist has not won in 13 starts since taking a valuable Irish handicap last year. All ground comes alike to him and he has not been disgraced in five of his last six defeats, some of which have come in stronger races than this. With that sort of ability and the pace likely to be on his side of the track we'll suggest him. Inter Vision is another drawn on that flank and has rocketed up the weights since winning back-to-back races at Catterick and Redcar, but he was competitive from this mark last time and won't be far away. Northern Fling can get involved if he is on his game and he has proved he can handle the undulations when winning here before, though off a stone or so lower. Connections of Rising Shadow and Zomerlust will be doing a rain dance to give that pair a better chance, while Fremen might not have enough pace. Total Impact has a 4lb rise to defy and might not quite see this out. Bel Cantor is another with a high draw and races over his best trip, while he acts on any ground, so he looks to be in there pitching but Machinist can outclass his opponents today.
