Verdict

Trainer Tom Tate has long been a shrewd customer and he may well have CALDERCRUIX primed to win first time in a handicap, while Logos Astra and Don't Call Me are others considered. The selection had three starts in maidens last year, running well enough in the latter pair, when he showed ability in defeat. Being by Rahy, this trip and fast ground should certainly suit, while the stable's runners have been showing good form and he may be up to the task on his reappearance. Logos Astra went well in defeat at Epsom last week and races from the same mark of 75 here. He has clearly got some ability but is finding it hard to nail down that win and looks vulnerable again today. Don't Call Me overcame greenness to score by over two lengths at Southwell over 7f, and Bryan Smart's charge should be suited by this step up to a mile. Fast ground shouldn't be a problem and he is respected. The other pair both have a bit to find on recent evidence and Caldercruix gets the nod.
