Verdict

Tawny Port, the only last-time winner on show, stuck on well to oblige in heavy ground at Haydock, although previous runs suggest he's at home on less demanding terrain. He'll go well along with Melaniemillie, winner of one of the most hotly-contested selling races of the year at York and far from disgraced in a novice stakes at Ripon since. She'll appreciate the return to a sixth furlong but another chance is given to FANCY DAY. Like so many Johnston inmates, she's produced totally contrasting efforts and is therefore hard to assess. Easily swept aside last time when a beaten favourite at Kempton, coming home last of six, she had previously made a really good impression when winning on debut at Pontefract. Hopefully the return to both 6f and grass will do the trick. Smiley Riley needs to put a tailed-off effort last time behind him.
